Back To School

Thanks for coming tonight.  I realize how tired everyone is at the end of the day.  I really appreciate you making the time to come.

Today, we read a book called, Listen Buddy.  We learned that listening is a very important skill and sometimes when we don't listen, we miss important details that matter.

Our first trip to the library was a success.  We listened to Ms. Smith, the librarian, read a book in the Story Pit.  We can't wait to go back next Tuesday.

August 29

Today we began talking about the Reading Workshop and the Writing Workshop.  First I read a book called, Reading Makes You Feel Good.  Then we talked about where we read, when we read, and who we can read to.  Then we sat at our tables and read for about 10 minutes.  That's a really long time when your only 5 years old.  We will work on increasing our reading time over the next few weeks.

To introduce the Writing Workshop, I read the book called, The Dot.  It's about a little girl who thinks that she can't draw.  She starts by making a dot on the paper.  The teacher says, "sign it" and then frames it.  That encourages the girl to believe that she can make an even better dot.  We learned that all you have to do is try your best...and sign it.

We also began putting together our Learning Journal.  This will hold any science and social studies projects.  The kids were very excited to see their work put together in a book.

Scholastic Book orders are due by Wednesday.  There's a quick link above Feed The Fish.

Don't forget that "Back To School" Night is Tuesday, August 30 at 6:00 pm.

See you there :)

Friday

We had a great first week in Kindergarten.  There are so many new routines that we have learned this week.  Next week we will practice them again to make sure we know them well.

Today we read a book about a dog that ran away.  And wouldn't you know it...our own class pet Sam the dog ran away.  We looked all over the school.  We looked in the library and met the librarian.  She told us that we could visit every week to read books.  We looked in the nurse's office too.  She told us that's where kids come when they don't feel good.  We even looked in the office.  We met Tia and Hope.  Once we learned our way around the school, it was time to head back to our classroom.  We couldn't believe our eyes.  Sam was back in our classroom, sitting in the teacher chair.  Silly Sam.  Now he sits up high on a shelf so he can't run away again.

We also learned about school tools.  Now we know that we put things back in their place so we can find them next time we need them.

We read another book called Have You Filled A Bucket Today.  We learned that we fill each other's invisible bucket when we are kind to one another.  Ask your child about bucket dipping.  Coyotes are NOT bucket dippers.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.  Please call or email if you need anything.

First Day in Kindergarten

We had a fantastic first day in Kindergarten.  I was so excited to see everybody this morning.  The kids learned a lot of different routines today.  I'm sure they are VERY tired.  Get some good sleep tonight because there will be more learning tomorrow.  It's going to be a great year.

Volunteers Needed

Our class is in need of volunteers for Homeroom Parent, Thursday Folders, and Special Projects.  The explanations are listed below.  If you are interested in volunteering, please send me an email and let me know!  Thank you!

Homeroom Parent / Room Mom:
The homeroom parent will be responsible for planning and setting up the Winter, Valentine's and End of Year party.  They will also be responsible for helping coordinate volunteers throughout the year for various events.  To fairly decide who will be room mom, I will put all the names in a bowl and pick out a name next week.

Thursday Folders:
The parent responsible for Thursday folders will come every Thursday (between 12:45 - 1:15) and stuff the student's Daily folders with the announcements from the office, PTA, etc.  If more than one parent would like to help, we can switch off every couple of months.

Special projects:
Volunteering for Special projects would be something that you could do at home to help.  For example, if I need something made or cut out, etc. I can send it home with your child.  This could also be coming up to the school and doing things in the workroom that I might need done (Di-cutting, laminating, etc.)  I will not need this but a few times during the year.

School Supply Drop-Off

Thank you so much to all of the parents for coming this morning.  It was so wonderful to meet you!  I cannot wait until Tuesday!
