Polar Express

We rode on an imaginary train and listened to The Polar Express.  Then, later on when we were watching the movie and sipping our hot chocolate, our class received a special gift from the North Pole!  We opened the box and found a class set of jingle bells!  We were so excited!

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas

We watched The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and talked about the Grinch's character traits.  We made the Grinch using construction paper and cotton and then made a web around him listing adjectives to describe his character.  We glued it in our writer's notebook.  We learned that he was not a very nice person at the beginning and middle of the story.

Sight Words

Today we practiced writing our sight words on white boards.  The kids did a great job and had a fun time.  Next we will work on applying those words in our writing notebooks.

Math Games

We've been using concrete objects to represent quantities by playing some fun math games.  We are getting better and better at identifying all our numbers to 30.  We are also learning that counting tells how many things are in a set, and that numbers are related to each other through a variety of number relationships.  Here are some fun pictures from class.

This game is called Domino Parking Lot.  Students grab a domino, count the dots,
and park it in the right spot!

This game is called "Roll the Number Game".  Students roll a dice, count the dots,
and find a recycled water bottle cap with the matching numeral on it.

Students use vase beads from a craft store to cover the dots that match the numeral on the card.

This is a really fun math activity that also helps reinforce fine motor skills.  I copied numbers onto white cardstock paper and glued them together so that it would "sandwich" around a pipe cleaner.  Then the students pushed the corresponding number of beads onto the pipe cleaner.  The kids loved it!

RECYCLING WINNERS

WE WON THE GOLDEN BIN.  Yay.  We recycled the most paper in the whole entire school this week.  That means we won the Golden Bin and we get to keep it in our room this week.  Great job.  I am so proud of you.

Pumpkins

Last week, we made two different pumpkin charts in class.  The kids first dictated different facts they already knew about pumpkins.  Then they drew pictures about what they knew.  We estimated how many seeds would be inside our medium sized pumpkin, cut it open, and found there were far more than we had guessed.

Three Billy Goats Gruff

On Monday, we learned that characters in a book can be people, animals, or objects that come to life.  We read Three Billy Goats Gruff and discussed the characters and setting.  Then we created the setting using popsicle sticks.

On Tuesday, Mrs. Cordon visited our class and taught us about characters and the different feelings that characters show in books.  She even brought a really neat chart to hang in our classroom so we can keep track of all of the characters we read about in fairy tales.
