Three Billy Goats Gruff

On Monday, we learned that characters in a book can be people, animals, or objects that come to life.  We read Three Billy Goats Gruff and discussed the characters and setting.  Then we created the setting using popsicle sticks.

On Tuesday, Mrs. Cordon visited our class and taught us about characters and the different feelings that characters show in books.  She even brought a really neat chart to hang in our classroom so we can keep track of all of the characters we read about in fairy tales.

Busy Day

We had a very busy day today.  Your little guys should be pooped out.  Mrs. Washburn from TAG visited our class, we went to the computer lab, previewed the Book Fair in the library, had our vision and hearing tested, and almost had a fire drill.  Go to bed early tonight  :)

Blending Colors

Today, in science we talked about blending colors.  Did you know that red and yellow make orange?  Well, that's what we discovered today.  I used a die-cut machine to cut out a leaf from a coffee filter.  Then the kids colored their leaves with red and yellow washable markers.  We used a spray bottle filled with water to "water" our leaf.  The colors mixed and turned the leaves orange.  Then we wrote about our experiment in our learning journal.

Parts of an Apple

Today we learned about the parts of an apple.  We used the top and bottom half of a red apple cut from a die-cut machine.  Then the kids had to draw the core, seeds, and flesh.  Then they labeled the different parts and glued it in their learning journal.

Apples and Patterns

We had library today and most of the kids got to check out new books.  If your child forgot their book, bring it tomorrow and they can go get a new one.

Today we made a chart of the properties of an apple.  We named what an apple feels like, tastes like, looks like, sounds like, and what products can be made from apples.  The kids drew different pictures of apples and then we glued them into a category on our chart.

We also talked about how to make different patterns today in math.  We made a color pattern today and soon we will talk about AB, ABB, AABB, and ABC patterns.

Do Apples Sink or Float?

Today we counted all of our apples and made a graph titled, How Many Different Apples Do We Have?  We wanted to find out if apples can float and we wanted to find out if different colors would sink or float.  We made predictions before the experiment.  Some of us guessed that the apples would sink because they were sooo big.  Some of us guessed that they would float because they were little.

We tested each color and found out that all apples float no matter what the color or size.

Apples, Apples, Apples

Today we sorted our apples by color and size.  We made a graph of our favorite color apple.  Then we measured around our apples using string and unifix cubes.  We used a balance to find out how many bears equal the weight of our apple.  It was quite a busy day in Room 218.

The Leaf Man

We made a leaf man with water colors using fall colors.  Then we wrote stories about the fall wind carrying off the leaf man to a faraway place.
