LANGUAGE ARTS
Readers will:
• Identify the topic and details of an informational (expository) text- words and/or illustrations will guide readers to identify the topic and details of texts.
• Refer to words and/or illustrations to understand the topic and details
• Retell important facts in a text
• Discuss the ways that authors group their information;
• Use cover (titles and cover illustrations) and illustrations to make predictions and inferences about text;
• Understand the purpose of an Informational text (expose or explain information about a topic).
• Monitor and adjust comprehension using background knowledge and rereading a portion aloud;
• Ask and respond to questions about text.
Writers will:
• Identify lists and captions and understand their purpose;
• Write invitations to request someone to attend a function (when it fits with class activities or units);
• Plan a first draft by generating ideas for writing through class discussion;
• Develop drafts by sequencing the action or details in their stories (picture plans);
• Revise and edit for spaces between letters and words in personal stories;
• Share writing with others.
MATH
Number Sense is an important aspect that children must develop. Number sense is the exploration of numbers, its uses, and its relationship to one another.
Why is number sense essential for every child to develop?
• It facilitates the understanding and expression of numbers contained in this world.
• The world is filled with numbers, and in order to understand what these numbers mean and what their purposes are, number sense must be gradually and continually developed throughout one’s lifetime.
• Number sense allows an individual to comprehend both, basic and complex mathematical operations.
• Number sense facilitates one to learn how to solve problems not just those with numbers involved, but also problems contained in the bigger world.
The following skills will be covered during this unit:
• Counting (one-to-one) tells how many objects are in a set. The last word, in a counting sequence, names quantity for the set.
• The position of a thing in a sequence can be described using words such as first, second, and third.
• Numbers are related to each other through a variety of number relationships.
• Numbers can be separated and put together in a variety of ways.
• Small whole numbers can be quickly recognized in patterned arrangements of dots.
• Computation problems can be solved in a variety of ways.
• Thinking strategies can be represented with physical models.
SCIENCE
Students will observe and record the effects of heating and cooling. Students will know that adding or taking away heat energy will change materials.
• Heating materials can cause them to melt or change in some other way.
• Cooling materials can cause them to freeze or change in some other way.
• We can record observations and discuss how materials are changed by heating and cooling
& Force & Motion
How do magnets and various materials interact?
How can we use magnets to explore the properties of materials
How can we describe the ways that everyday objects can move?
SOCIAL STUDIES
Students will establish the foundation for responsible citizenship by examining the difference between needs and wants and how citizens in a community provide those needs and wants.

Our TAG teachers wanted to make sure that parents are aware of the Parent Information Night for TAG Program. They asked to please post the following information:
The parent meeting for TAG nominations is coming up soon!!!
Tuesday, November 13, 2012 is the date. The meeting will be in the Forest Creek Library at 5:15 PM. This meeting will discuss the TAG program, who can nominate students, and what TAG students are.
In math, we have been creating patterns. Perhaps your child has been trying to find patterns at home. The students LOVE finding patterns!
In reading, we have been locating sight words and reading for fluency. We are also independently reading up to 20 minutes now which is AWESOME! I hope that your child is also reading at home and is enjoying the Raz-kids site.
In writing, we are stretching our words to hear more sounds, segmenting and blending. We use our arms to sound out words so it is easier to hear a beginning, middle and ending sound. We are also working on adding details to our pictures.
In our staff development meeting today, a site was shared called ABCya.com. It had some fun things that your child might enjoy.
Thank you for being so faithful in sending a note when your child has a change in his/her regular dismissal procedure. If your child is attending Running Club on Mondays, you only need to send in one note and then every Monday, your child will be dismissed with the Running Club children. They will be walked to the track.
The weather will be getting cooler this week-end, so please label your child's jacket so it can be returned instead of going to the lost and found box. THANK YOU!

It is amazing all the learning going on in kindergarten.
We have been working on stamina. Stamina is being able to do something for a long time. In kindergarten, it takes awhile to build up stamina for reading and writing. We have worked up to six minutes of independent on task reading.
The children have learned there are 3 ways to read:
read the pictures
read the words
retell a familiar story
The children know that they should choose to read at the level most appropriate for them. If your child is already a reader, he or she is reading the words.
In writing, we have discussed what writers do:
think about something you would like to share
get a picture in your head before writing
draw a picture plan
write about your picture to share your story
At this time, the children are drawing a picture and one of the following:
writing random letters on the page
labeling pictures with beginning and/or ending sounds
writing a sentence
In math, we have worked on recognizing shapes: circle, oval, square, rectangle, and triangle. We have compared the various shapes and discussed the attributes. We have begun sorting shapes by color, size, and shape as well.
In science, we have been talking about what science is and the many jobs of a scientist. We have learned that scientists:
explore
measure
ask questions
experiment
and learn
For the next couple of weeks, we will be discussing autumn, sorting, and continue to build stamina in reading and writing.
